NHL: #3 Washington Capitals at #6 Philadelphia Flyers (Flyers lead 2-1)

Thursday Apr 17th, 7:00 pm ET, Versus, TSN

Richard (3-2)

After taking the early series lead, the Capitals have dropped the last 2 and find themselves down a game in this best-of-seven series. Mike Green has been a bright spot for Washington having scored 3 goals and 1 assist through the first 3 games. Current Art Ross Trophy holder Alexander Ovechkin’s been held in check by the Flyers’ Mike Richards and has totaled just 1 goal and 2 assists in the series thus far. The Caps are going to need greater offensive production from Ovechkin if they expect to tie the series up in Philadelphia tonight. Whether that means more open looks or more aggressive play from the other members of his line (Backstrom, Kozlov) coach Bruce Boudreau is sure to find a solution. Don’t forget, the Caps were 6-14-1 when he inherited the team on November 22, 2007 and finished the season 37-17-7, winning their first Southeast Division title since the 2000-01 season and making the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.
Rob (2-3)

The Flyers' defense has been suffocating throughout the series, limiting the high-powered, Alex Ovechkin throughout. Daniel Briere, who had two goals in the Flyers' last game, along with his other speed-skating linemates have torched the Washington defense that remains too undisciplined to cope with Philadelphia's high-flying attack. In fact, no player over the past two years has more postseason points than Briere, and when he is on his game, there is no stopping the Flyers. The Flyers sport one of the game's best coaches in John Steves, who changed the defensive plan after the loss in game one, and has confounded the Capitals since. While the team's remain well-matched, look for Philadelphia to extend their lead and take control of this series through their pounding defense on NHL's probable MVP, Alex Ovechkin.

Shaquille O'Neal
Shaquille O'NealC | Phoenix Suns | Newark, New Jersey | Height: 7-1 | Weight: 325 lbs

The Big Aristotle has made his way to the desert city just for this reason: the Playoffs. Last season, the Suns lost to the Spurs in 7 games, losing in the end due to the lack of a big body to battle Tim Duncan. Enter Shaquille O'Neal. The 325 lb all-star was acquired in a trade from Miami for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to provide the inside, low-post presence that the Phoenix Suns so desperately needed. While Shaq's numbers themselves don't jump off the page, 13 points and 11 rebounds, it is his huge presence that frees up Amare Stoudamire to roam around and play MVP-caliber basketball that makes all the difference. Since Shaq arrived in Phoenix, Stoudamire has been absolutely unstoppable, switching from playing at thesmall center position to becoming an overpowering power forward. Though the pundits have bashed the trade, the Suns are beginning to show signs that Shaq in a run-and-gun system can actually work. Watch out for Shaq Diesel to make a statement in his first round match up with the San Antonio Spurs, proving everyone wrong by showing that he still is the most dominating big man in the game. NBA: #8 Atlanta Hawks (37-45) at #1 Boston Celtics (66-16)
Boston CheerleadersSunday Apr 20th, 8:30 pm ET, TNT

7 games separate the 1st and 8th seeds in the Western Conference. 29 games separate the Celtics and Hawks! If I was a betting man and had to pick 1 of the 16 playoff teams not to advance into the 2nd round, the Hawks would be it. No offense to Atlanta who’s had an All-Star season from Joe Johnson, but only he and Mike Bibby have postseason experience.

By comparison, the Celtics have 254 playoff games worth of experience sitting on their bench (Cassell, Brown, Posey, House)! Throw Garnett, Pierce, and Allen into the mix and you’ve got the recipe for a run to the NBA Finals! What’s more is the longer the Celtics stay in the mix, the hotter the playoffs remain!
