NBC Sports, Jacked Create Online Experience For Notre Dame Football
SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL | Eric Fisher | August 31, 2007
NBC Sports has partnered with Jacked, a Santa Monica-based start-up technology firm, to create Play Action, a personalized online experience to complement its TV coverage of Notre Dame football. In the Jacked Web module, to be located at both nbcsports.com and jacked.com, fans will see a continuous stream of real-time data, statistics, news feeds, chat windows and in-stadium photos, all loading up in direct context with the ongoing development of the game.
The free offering is particularly aimed at younger viewers who already frequently watch sports in concert with a laptop and seek out information during a game. Play Action will also include live video streams of NBC's pre-game, halftime and post-game shows produced for Notre Dame football coverage. The network is currently seeking a lead sponsor for the ad-supported venture.
"You have a great many fans that now will not do without their laptop, and the question for us became how we can package up this data, make it easier for our viewers to find, and make it all more engaging," said Perkins Miller, NBC Sports & Olympics Senior VP/Digital Media. "We’re looking to push the envelope and this product is incredibly innovative. It’s still an experiment, but we're very encouraged."
Jacked execs are now seeking to line up other similar network and team-level deals. Financial terms for the NBC pact were not disclosed, but similar to other Internet content partnerships, the deal involves revenue sharing of ad revenue.
